Volunteers Wanted
The shelter dogs can always use volunteers to bath, to walk and to communicate with them. If you are interested in helping the animals, please contact us.

Who we are
The Greene County Animal Shelter is a small rural shelter in the northeast of Virginia. The Shelter operates under guidelines from the Commonwealth of Virginia to temporarily house stray or injured animals, provide for adoption of as many animals as possible and to humanely follow procedures for euthanasia for unwanted animals. The Shelter strives to encourage, promote, and preserve responsible pet ownership and to prevent any form of cruelty to animals. Our goal since January of 2015 is to have all the dogs to be spayed/neutered before being adopted to their forever family. You can help by donating to the spay/neuter fund of The Greene County Animal Shelter. We are located at 37 Jeri Allen Way, Ruckersville, VA 22968. There are two separate organizations in the building. The Greene County Animal Shelter is located on the left side of the building and only rehomes dogs. On the other side of the building is Madison-Greene Humane Society who rehome cats. Please come by and visit us and our shelter dogs. For more information see the Greene County Animal Control website.

100% of Dogs Saved in 2024
Our intake increased but that just means more dogs were spay/neutered, all thanks to your donations to our spay/neuter fund. We had a total of 344 dogs walk through our shelter in 2024. The exciting part is we had a 100% SAVE RATE for 2024!

    Our numbers for 2024:
  • ADOPTED: 212
  • RECLAIMED: 97
  • Transferred to rescue in VA: 9
  • Transferred to rescue out of state: 9
None of this would have been possible if it was not for the amazing network we have with each of you. Thank you to all who continue to support our small shelter that is making a big impact. Here is to 2025 with bringing more second chances.

Lost your dog?
Stray dogs without identification are kept for 5 days before being put up for adoption. Dogs with identification are kept for 10 days before being put up for adoption. Contact the shelter to check whether your pet is there. Some of the stray dogs are featured on the Greene County Animal Shelter Facebook Page but not all are put here so contact the shelter if you have lost your dog.

Please Donate to Help the Dogs
We need towels, blankets, hard and soft dog food, basic cleaning supplies and dog beds. We also have an Amazon Wishlist. See our Donation Page for other items we can use. You can also donate to our Spay/Neuter Fund. For more information about how you can donate, see our Donation Page. On behalf of the dogs thank you.
